Ban Asbestos

Asbestos is a known killer and a leading cause of workers’ deaths in Canada and around the world.

Most developed countries, including the European Union, have banned asbestos. The World Health Organization (WHO), the International Labour Organization, the Canadian Cancer Society and other respected organizations have called for a ban on all forms of asbestos. But instead of banning asbestos, the Canadian government uses tax-payers dollars and Canadian embassies to actively promote the sale of asbestos around the world.

Over 90% of Canada’s asbestos goes to developing countries, where worker protections are weak or non-existent.

The Canadian government pushes the spin of the asbestos industry that chrysotile asbestos can somehow be safely handled. Medical experts and knowledgeable organizations, such as the WHO, disagree. And as the government knows full well, safety protections are usually non-existent in developing countries.

Quebec, home to most of Canada’s asbestos mines, has one of the highest rates of mesothelioma (a deadly cancer caused by asbestos) on the planet. Yet the Canadian government refuses to even keep track of the growing numbers of Canadian workers who are sick and dying from asbestos-caused cancer.

And internationally Canada is acting as a scoundrel. Canada has been severely criticized for preventing the listing of chrysotile asbestos as a hazardous product under the Rotterdam Convention, an International Agreement that requires that importing countries be warned of the risks associated with hazardous products.

The next meeting of the Parties to the Rotterdam Convention takes place in Rome in October 2008.

The disgrace of Canada’s
asbestos policy

On Oct. 4, the United States Senate unanimously passed Bill 742, the Ban Asbestos In America Act of 2007, sponsored by Senator Patty Murray. This takes the United States one step closer to ending a century of widespread asbestos use, an era that has left an expensive and tragic legacy of contamination, remediation and fatal disease caused by this deadly carcinogen.

In stark contrast to the United States, the Canadian government has recently reaffirmed its commitment to promoting and expanding the use of asbestos both at home and abroad. In 2005, the Liberals adopted a truly disturbing report by the standing committee on international trade that urged the government to support, develop and promote the asbestos industry, to research new product lines for asbestos, to encourage the use of asbestos in government procurement and purchasing and to develop new export markets so we can sell even more of it to developing nations.

Then, in November, 2006, the Conservatives published new regulations that helpfully point out all the places where asbestos can be used in this country. The list includes textiles, construction materials, such as drywall compound and spray-on insulation, and incredibly, children’s toys.

Asbestos is the greatest industrial killer the world has ever known, yet Canada remains one of the largest producers and exporters in the world, dumping more that 220,000 tons a year into developing nations, where health and safety standards are often negligible or not enforced. There is no safe level of asbestos. A single fibre can cause asbestos-related disease. The World Health Organization, the International Labour Organization and the Canadian Cancer Society agree that all types of asbestos should be banned. Yet Canada stubbornly and aggressively continues to push it all over the world. Without exaggeration, we are exporting human misery on a monumental scale.

Many Canadians think asbestos is banned already in Canada, and they’d be horrified to learn that successive federal governments have spent a fortune in taxpayers’ money promoting the industry. Our foreign trade commissions soften up foreign customers and host asbestos-promotion events right in our embassies. The federal government has given approximately $30-million to the industry directly in recent years. And our government eagerly supports the asbestos industry by sending teams of department of justice lawyers around the world like globe-trotting propagandists, to block countries from banning asbestos and to strong-arm small weak countries into keeping asbestos off the international lists of hazardous materials like the Rotterdam Convention.

The fact is no amount of government money will ever take the stink off the asbestos industry. I call it corporate welfare for corporate serial killers.

In many ways, the asbestos industry is the tobacco industry’s evil twin. Both survived much longer than they should have using lies, cover-ups, tainted research and aggressive political lobbying. And just as the tobacco industry used the myth of “tobacco light” as a last ditch effort, the Canadian asbestos industry tells the world that the asbestos mined in Quebec is somehow magically benign compared to the “bad” asbestos mined elsewhere. After years of cover-ups, that myth has finally been debunked by Quebec’s own National Institute of Public Health, which has found some of the world’s highest incidence of asbestos-related diseases in the province’s own mining region.

Canada’s position on asbestos is morally and ethically reprehensible, and we are becoming an international outlier as a result. The rest of the developed world is banning asbestos in all its forms. Australia, Japan, South Africa and all the nations of the European Union have recently implemented a total ban on all forms of the substance. And now the United States is finally coming on side in spite of the powerful asbestos lobby in that country.

So is Canada crazy? I prefer to think that the answer is yes, because the alternative is unthinkable. The alternative is that we as a nation are knowingly and willingly contaminating people around the world to protect the commercial interests of the asbestos cartel, and the political interests of successive governments who refuse to stand up to the industry because all the asbestos mines are in Quebec.

If we are that gutless and spineless we deserve the scorn and derision of the international community, whose members can’t understand why a nice country like Canada would impose this made-in-Canada epidemic on the rest of the world.

This is only the beginning. Within the next coming months leading up to the predicted Illuminati downfall in February of 2009, the governments all around the world will begin to release a much larger amount of formerly "classified" secrets that will be available for public viewing. White House and Pentagon distort the science to protect themselves and their corporate defense contractors from liability on water contamination

The Environmental Protection Agency says there is no need to act on the fact that a toxic rocket fuel ingredient, which has been proven to lead to a loss of IQ and an increase in behavioral and perception problems, has long been present in drinking water across the U.S.

In a remarkable reversal of it’s position, the EPA, has ditched six years of effort into persuading the government that perchlorate contamination poses a serious risk to the public and should be regulated.

Perchlorate, has been found in at least 395 sites in 35 states at levels high enough to interfere with thyroid function and pose developmental health risks, particularly for babies and fetuses, reports AP. The toxic chemical has also been found in lettuce and other foods.

It is used by defense and aerospace contractors in conjunction with the Pentagon in rockets and missiles.

Blogger Rick Attig at the Oregonian succinctly explains why the EPA has suddenly decided to back down and drop it’s efforts to address perchlorate contamination:

It’s obvious what’s going on here. The administration wants nothing to do with a cleanup that could cost hundreds of millions of dollars or more. Nor does the Pentagon want to expose its friendly defense contractors to the costs of cleaning up the contamination they are responsible for leaving behind to seep into drinking water in at least 35 states and the District of Columbia.

Attig also points out that the Bush administration and the Pentagon are preparing to fix the science to justify not regulating perchlorate by setting the maximum contamination level at 15 times the figure the EPA suggested in 2002.

The revelations first appeared in a Washington Post report Sunday, after the paper received a near final EPA “preliminary regulatory determination” document.

That document revealed that the government opted not to use a National Academy of Science formula for determining safe levels of perchlorate in drinking water, the model preferred by the nation’s top scientists, instead opting to use a computer model developed by the Chemical Industry Institute of Toxicology.

No conflict of interest there then.

The report also revealed that the White House deleted references to scientific studies which highlighted the link between perchlorate’s impact on thyroid function and an irreversible loss of IQ and perception in young people from babies to those in the 20s.

The document estimates that up to 16.6 million Americans are exposed to perchlorate at a level many scientists consider unsafe; independent researchers, using federal and state data, put the number at 20 million to 40 million.

Robert Zoeller, a University of Massachusetts professor who specializes in thyroid hormone and brain development, told reporters that the government amendments to the EPA proposal “have distorted the science to such an extent that they can justify not regulating” the toxic chemical.

“Infants and children will continue to be damaged, and that damage is significant.” Zoeller said.

Perchlorate is just one toxic horror readily found in the drinking water of people all over America. We have previously reported on studies that have found that numerous pharmaceutical drugs, from antidepressants like prozac to sex hormones, currently contaminate the water supplies of millions.

In addition millions more are being being mass-medicated against their will in many water districts by way of sodium fluoride, which is classed as a poison, being added to water supplies without their consent. The latest scientific reports have pointed to strong evidence of the waste chemical’s link to disorders affecting teeth, bones, the brain and the thyroid gland, as well as lowering IQ.

Despite these facts, the government continues to aim to have 75% of American water fluoridated by 2010.

It is now clearly the responsibility of people everywhere to lobby representatives at the state and local levels to implement their own drinking water regulations in response to the combination of negligence, cronyism and downright criminal actions of the federal government on this matter.

Several states have already acted on their own. In 2007, California adopted a drinking water standard of 6 parts per billion for perchlorate, while Massachusetts has set a drinking water standard of 2 parts per billion. Meanwhile other towns and cities across the country have voted to remove fluoride from their water.

Given that states like Pennsylvania have passed laws making it illegal to remove fluoride from a community’s drinking water supply once such fluoridation is started, It is essential that action is taken on this matter before others follow suit.

George Ure and his colleague 'Cliff', two self-described "time monks," shared dire predictions based on their web bot technology. Their method captures changes in language patterns within Internet discussions. This aggregated data is then processed with software to determine various keywords, which they interpret in a predictive fashion.

Beginning on October 7, 2008 and running through March 2009, they foresee a calamitous period on an epic scale. America will be beset by a variety of problems, which they broke down as 45-48% related to the economy, 40% concerning the military, and the rest associated with natural disasters. Between 2 and 22 million lives could be lost or seriously impacted, they estimated, possibly related to a "global coastal event" in 2009. On Dec. 10-12th, 2008, a large quake could hit the Pacific Northwest, they added.

The two recommended developing self-sufficiency and the ability to live off the grid. They also spoke about strange disappearances next year, in which people, including those in power, will vanish without a trace into interdimensional doorways. Additionally, an object they call a "coherer" -- a reverse-engineered or left-behind dimensional artifact is currently in the possession of people who are concerned for their lives.
